Starting January 1, 2024, wine and distilled spirits products were added to the California Beverage Container Recycling Program (BCRP). As such, wineries and distilleries will now be required to comply with the Bottle Bill’s CA Redemption Value (CRV) payment and reporting obligations. These have been included to the list of beverage packaging already covered by the program:
- Beer and Malt Beverages
- Wine Coolers
- Carbonated Fruit Drinks, Water or Soft Drinks
- Noncarbonated Fruit Drinks, Water, or Soft Drinks
- Coffee and Tea Beverages
- 100% Fruit Juice less than 46 oz.
- Vegetable Juice 16 oz. or less
Therefore, all these beverages, including wines and spirits sold in California after July 1, 2025, must be labeled with some type of approved CRV statement which needs to be clearly, prominently, and indelibly marked. Producers should start including this information on their bottles and/or labels as soon as possible for all products to be offered for sale on or after January 1, 2025.
